Non-linear Power Point

Reflect on non-linear Power Point. Is this something you could use with students? What (if any) is the value of this over traditional PPTs?

Looking into past presentations, I realized that all of my powerpoints in the past have been linear. In other words, I went from Slide 1 to Slide 2 to Slide 3, and so on and so forth. Quite boring when you think about it. Linear powerpoints follow a straight line and go through the slides in a numerical fashion. Nonlinear powerpoints, on the other hand, are very different. They allow the presenter to navigate through the presentation in any manner by jumping from slide to slide as needed. What is fun about nonlinear powerpoints is that you can get different results based on what you click or how you want to explore the presentation. Non-linear powerpoints are presentations that are extremely interactive! I can easily see using this in the classroom with my students. It would be fun to use a non-linear powerpoint in conjuction with a smartboard. The students could get up from their seats and interact with the non-linear powerpoint with their hands.

The concept of non-linear powerpoints is something I can really see as an easy and useful resource in all classrooms. High School students can use this for presentations, and can jump around from page to page. It is a great solution for group projects because everyone can really have their own section and ownership of the powerpoint, but still only one project can be handed in. As far as my Special Ed students go, making games using non-linear powerpoint is an excellent resource. It teaches children facts as well as computer skills and it can be used individually or as a group. It can include pictures for visual learners and you can even have the computer read the text aloud for audio learners. I really support this type of powerpoint because of its simplicity and range. It has so many different uses and can be used by so many different types of students and teachers.

I really liked learning about Non-linear power points. I have has multiple classes on giving presentations and how to use power point, and this was new to me. I thought I knew a great deal about power point, but, I was wrong. This was very interesting and I was surprised at how much I like this aspect of power point. I feel like this new skill I have acquired will help me in my future presentations, which I am sure I will have to give. I feel I could incorporate this powerpoint format into meetings, such as team meetings and PPT's. This could really enhance a typical meeting and bring it to the next level. I also think I could use this with students, as a quiz/fun assignment like I have created with my first non-linear powerpoint.

Prior to the class on non-linear powerpoints, I had never heard of this concept, considering that I had never been assigned a project that required anything more than a bunch of slides, clicking from one to the next. I actually had fun learning about and making this type of powerpoint, and think it could be a great resource for teachers to create quick and informal quizzes and tests for their students. If parents wish, they could also quickly create something to help their child prepare for a test in a fun way.
I can also see teachers using non-linear powerpoints as an interactive activity on a SmartBoard. Students could come to the board individually and select their answers, making for a great review lesson.

I enjoyed the "Non-linear Powerpoint" experience. I created a quiz on literary terms. powerpoint has a wide variety of clipart, so I was able to find pictures related to my topic. I used an eraser image when the wrong answer was selected - clicking the eraser brings you back to the question. This is a nice feature of non-linear powerpoint - going to a different slide depending on what answer you select. I think this is something students could use for creating their own powerpoint presentations. Teachers can also create lessons with review questions that either lead forward in the lesson or back for more review.
The value of non-linear powerpoint over the traditional variety is that they are designed to be more interactive. This, in turn, holds the audience's attention better. Non-linear powerpoint presentations are a useful tool for teachers to engage their students and let them become involved - not just listen to a lecture.

Non-linear Powerpoints are a fabulous idea for classrooms! I have used powerpoint for many projects throughout college and for professional presentations, however I never realized that you can create an interactive powerpoint that allows for students to click through and participate instead of just receiving information and internalizing it. This is a great idea for any grade especially the upper elementary grades to study a recent topic or prepare for an upcoming quiz or test. Since the recent integration of Smartboard technology in the classrooms and the push for teachers to integrate them more into the day, non-linear powerpoints are a great way to get students up out of their chairs and participate in the presentation by "sharing the pen" or rather, sharing the board. The ease of creating a non-linear powerpoint was incredible! Because this was such an easy task I think I would be more apt to use this in my classroom.

I think the non-linear power point is a great idea to use in the classroom. Power points have been used in the classroom for years where students create one, present it to the class showing one slide at a time. I'm happy to see that there is a different way to show a project with fun buttons for students to use. Non-linear power points can be fun for students to be creative in their projects, giving "right" and "wrong" buttons to their projects. Powerpoints can be boring and now, students can create projects that are more like games then work. I think this is great for students!

Today in class we learned how to create our very own non-linear power point projects. What is a non-linear power point project? It's a dynamic form of a regular power point presentation. Hyperlinks are incorporated and transitions to different slides are made easy. It is a perfect way to make simple quizzes and study material.
It is fairly simple to create a non-linear presentation. I chose to introduce and incorporate a mini-quiz on four Spanish verbs. I first created the title slide, four slides introducing each verb and its conjugations, and three quiz questions on verb conjugations. Now, the tedious part was highlighting different text and/or clipart and assigning hyperlinks to them. For instance, I located and pasted a 'start button' to place on my title slide. I right-clicked on the image, hit 'hyperlink' and clicked on the slide that I wan the title slide to transition into (in this case, a slide with all four Spanish verbs and a picture associated to each). Each verb conjugation slide has a text that turns into the next verb conjugation slide when you click on it.

The tricky part about this assignment was assigning the "wrong answer, try again" and "right answer, move on!" to each multiple choice answer on each of the slides for the short quiz. I had to make sure to correctly link each multiple choice answer to either a "wrong answer" slide or a "new quiz question" slide. I did not have any trouble with this assignment but I did notice that I frequently had to "start the slideshow" and go through my project to make sure all of the links worked properly.

I will definitely try to incorporate non-linear powerpoint projects into my curriculum as a Spanish teacher. I, however, do not think I will depend on them as they take a lot of time creating and linking slides through hyperlinks. I do believe it would be a good project for students. For example, I can have students research and present a topic on Spanish culture which requires hyperlinks to take us to different slides. I do believe this is a more interactive and fun way of presenting over the traditional powerpoint projects. Traditional powerpoint is very static and does not allow for much creativity. All of the slides move in a linear fashion and it is quite different to jump around to different slides. Non-linear presentations allow the creater to incorporate hyperlinks to access each of the slides that are in the presentation. This enables the creater to be flexibile with the project and access different slides as necessary.

I thought the non-linear Power Point presentation was fantastic. Great program to interact with students in question/answer formats, make presentations, and review material... I have used traditional Power Point extensively, especially at work. Power Point allows a speaker to be organized, develop a theme logically and highlight important information. Non-linear Power Point takes this program one step further by allowing the speaker to interact directly with his/her audience in a very dynamic way.
I am happy I was introduced to this program and anticipate using it extensively in the future...

In this class I learned that I could do much more with Power Point Presentation than just presenting each slide in order. With non-linear Power Point one can make a more interactive presentations. Non-linear Power Point is a presentation format where the slides can be used in any order. Teachers can make multiple-choice quizzes. Clicking on the answer will bring you to a slide with that answer and tells whether it is correct or not. Non-linear Power Point can be easily done by linking together hyperlinked text or pictures to a slide. I will definitely use this kind of presentation in my teaching, because it makes learning engaging and assessments easy.

So, where is the Power of PowerPoint?
I do not know, but I sometimes think about it, and look what this guy says. Impossible, I hope we do not get a big community of stupidities because as he says, PowerPoint is being used everywhere, not matter what people need to present, PowerPoint is the best way to do that. There a lot of points to think about by this reading. This is just to point over what the reading is pointing, do not abuse PowerPoint, do not let PowerPoint abuse of you, just try to get some freedom of some stuff like this, just combine traditional ways and technology that is what I do, and at the end I am happy, because I feel fortunate for living in a world using technology but having experiences with traditional ways to do my work. Do not make everything too simple that look obvious, everything is not obvious, there are a lot of complex things. , Jose

I enjoyed learning how to use non-linear PowerPoint's. I think they can be valuable to students who need to engage with the material at their own pace in a differentiated classroom. In general I think that PowerPoint can be a great tool for educators as it helps create a framework for lessons that stick to the learning objective. Problem is it takes away from students ability to decide for themselves what the key take aways of the lesson are.

Non-linear PowerPoint:

When I look back on my non-linear PowerPoint, I am surprised I could do it. I know this sounds silly, but it seemed really hard in the beginning. But, then it made sense what I was trying to do on my iMac because I watched a YouTube video on how to insert hyperlinks needed to make the slides work together. On my website, I included a video on how it can be used in the classroom. My first thought were games one can play in school, related to the topic being covered. There are lots to choose from on YouTube videos and the “how to’s” are excellent!

I like them better than the standard, regular PowerPoint. I see they have more to offer and it’s more entertaining to do something like this and carry it over onto something like a SmartBoard. I haven’t done this, nor do I know if it is possible yet. I will have to try it, experiment, and see if the kids like it in my classroom. I have a feeling they will!

Thanks,
Laurel

Today, I went to the beachfront with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it
to my 4 year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear."
She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.
She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off topic but
I had to tell someone!
